The Louvre Museum

The Louvre Museum

The Louvre museum which was a fortress in the late XIIth century was extended many times to form the present Louvre Palace. In 1682, Louis XIV chose the Palace of Versailles for his household, leaving the Louvre primarily as a place to display the royal collection, including, from 1692, a collection of antique sculpture.
The Louvre Museum presents today collections of western art from the Middle Ages to 1850 and also the antique civilisations that have preceded and influenced this art and is the first museum in the world with more than 6 million visitors every year. The Louvre is now divided between Oriental Antiquities, Islamic Art, Egyptian Antiquities, Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities and, for the modern period, Paintings, Sculptures, Art items, Prints and Drawings.
